Central Florida Congressman Darren Soto married his new wife, Sheyla Asencios, who previously served on his campaign and as his District Director.
The Democrat represents Florida’s 9th congressional district in the Orlando area, with Osceola County and parts of Orange County and Polk County. He is being targeted by Republicans as one of the vulnerable Democrats in Congress up for re-election.
Rep. Darren Soto previously posted on social media that he was “blessed to announce the engagement of Sheyla A. Asencios and I” and thanked her for “making me the luckiest guy in the world!”

The Central Florida Congressman said Sheyla Asencios was born in Peru and raised in Kissimmee, she is a UF grad who has worked in politics and government for many years, including being a Biden political appointee at the U.S. Department of Commerce. She currently works with Alianza for Progress advocating for Florida’s Puerto Rican and Hispanic communities.

According to her Alianza bio, Sheyla Asencios is a veteran political operative, organizer, and communications strategist – a “messaging expert.” She has connected issues to elections, advanced progressive policies, and helped elect candidates at all levels. She designs and oversees organizing programs that mobilize progressive voters. “Her political journey began in Kissimmee, Florida, supporting Darren Soto’s State Senate campaign, later serving as his District Director and Health Policy Staffer during the COVID-19 pandemic,” the bio states. She has held key roles in the Florida Democratic Party, SEIU 32BJ, and multiple campaigns.
Democratic Representative Darren Soto and his first wife, Amanda Soto, were together for years and had a few public and seemingly divorced quietly. According to an arrest report years ago, Congressman Soto was with his previous wife the day of her Disney arrest.
Congressman Soto announced the marriage to Sheyla A. Asencios took place in Orlando.
