Casey’s Fall: No Policy, Procedures Violated

An internal review by the Orange County Corrections Department of Casey Anthony’s fall has concluded that no policy or procedural violations were breached.   Anthony fell face forward on June 1st when the chains of her leg irons became wedged in the elevator door shaft, as she was being escorted from the 19th to the 23rd floor of the Orange County Courthouse.

Anthony sustained minor injuries: a chipped tooth, busted lip and bruised knee.  She has confirmed orally and in a written statement that assistance was rendered in helping her to get up and medical assistance was provided by the officers escorting her.  Anthony was also transported to an area hospital for treatment.

Prior to falling, Anthony was on her way to court on Tuesday where her defense attorneys were arguing several motions, including one on the death penalty, before Chief Judge Belvin Perry.

In May, the prosecution had outlined their reasons for seeking the death penalty, including aggravated child abuse. Prosecutors have also maintained that the murder of Casey’s daughter was “especially heinous, atrocious and cruel” and “cold, calculated and pre-mediated.”

Perry ruled on Tuesday that Anthony will still face the death penalty.

Anthony is charged with first degree murder in the death of her two-year-old daughter, Caylee.  She has maintained her innocence, saying that Caylee was kidnapped by a baby sitter.   The toddler’s body was found several months after the child went missing, in a wooded area near the Anthony family home.

Anthony sits in the Orange County Jail awaiting trial which is expected to commence in May 2011.
