Report: Black Infant Mortality Rate Up in 2011

Despite an overall drop to a historic low, infant mortality for non-white infants increased in 2011 from the year before, the Florida Department of Health reported Thursday.

Overall, the resident infant mortality rate dropped in Florida from 6.5 to 6.4 deaths per 1,000 births. The drop was fueled by a lower death rate for white infants, which fell from 4.9 deaths per 1,000 to 4.6.

The resident infant mortality rate among black and other non-white births increased from 10.8 per 1,000 live births in 2010 to 11.1 in 2011.
