Bethune-Cookman University Launches Phase Two of Lilly Grant Initiative

Bethune-Cookman University recently announced the launch of Phase Two of its Lilly Grant initiative, “Equipping Leaders for Ministry.”

This next phase will open dynamic new pathways for students from any major to complete meaningful internship experiences with small churches through a primarily digital format.

Originally awarded one million dollars in 2019, the grant was recently re-awarded an additional $465,000 from Lilly Endowment Inc. to support and expand the program over the next five years. This initiative is a partnership between Bethune-Cookman University, the Florida Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church, and Lilly Endowment Inc.

Phase Two is designed to connect students’ required internship hours with real needs in local congregations. By focusing on areas such as Hospitality, Technology, Systems, and Worship, the program will:

  • Allow students to apply intergenerational interactive perspective combining classroom learning in real-world ministry and organizational contexts
  • Provide small churches with critical support in high-impact areas
  • Strengthen congregations that play an essential role in their communities

“Equipping Leaders for Ministry is about putting talent where it is needed most,” said retired Professor Dr. Alice Wood, Principal Investigator.

“Students gain practical experience that counts toward their degree requirements, and churches receive skilled support that helps them serve more effectively. Everyone benefits,” added Dr. David Allen, Program Director.

Phase Two will emphasize digital and hybrid engagement, making it possible for students to support churches regardless of geography, while maintaining strong accountability and structured mentoring. The program will welcome students from a wide range of majors whose skills connect to ministry and community service, including communications, business, technology, music, and the arts.

Dr. Allen and Dr. Wood will share additional details about student participation, church partner requirements, application timelines, and training opportunities in February 2026 as the program prepares to launch.

This new phase of the Lilly Foundation grant will officially begin in August 2026.

Founded in 1904 by Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune, Bethune-Cookman University is a private, historically Black university in Daytona Beach in Central Florida.
