Apopka Police Use High-Tech Cameras to Solve Crime, Recover Stolen Vehicles

Apopka Police are using high-tech Flock Safety Automated License Plate Reading (ALPR) cameras to solve crime and recover stolen vehicles. These ALPR cameras have been purchased by local Apopka neighborhoods and shared with law enforcement, enabling a system where police and private communities can better work together on crime reduction.

In one case, Apopka Police received an alert from the Flock Safety camera system that a vehicle associated with a wanted suspect had been detected. The suspect had been approaching vehicle sellers on Facebook Marketplace, asking to test drive the vehicle, and then driving away to steal the vehicle. This had taken place several times.

Law enforcement were able to pull a license plate from the Flock Safety system, follow up with the registered owner of the vehicle, and locate the suspect.

As crime continues to be a problem in Orlando and Orange County, neighborhoods are taking more actions like this to provide more safety to residents. Another Orlando neighborhood also had success utilizing this innovative technology.

Flock Safety ALPR cameras help law enforcement investigate crime by providing objective evidence that can be transformed into actionable leads. They capture license plates and vehicle characteristics, not people or faces.

Flock Safety is a public safety operating system that helps communities and law enforcement in thousands of cities work together to eliminate crime, protect privacy, and mitigate bias. The company says they build devices that capture objective evidence and use machine learning to detect and deliver unbiased investigative leads to law enforcement.

Law enforcement agencies report 600-700 crimes per day solved with Flock Safety technology, approaching 3% of all reported crime in America.
