Orlando Neighborhood Sees Results With Crime-Solving License Plate Readers

As Automated License Plate Readers (ALPR) gain popularity in helping police solve crime across Florida, one neighborhood in Orlando has already seen success utilizing this innovative technology. Following a case of assault with a firearm and subsequent theft of a neighbor‘s dog, the Enclave at Hiawassee decided to take an extra step to protect residents by installing Flock Safety License Plate Reading cameras, which have been reported to help reduce crime by up to 70%.

After evaluating multiple security solutions, the neighborhood‘s HOA decided to install the Flock Safety cameras to improve security and deter crime while also protecting the privacy of its residents. 7 in 10 crimes occur with a vehicle, so an LPR camera is one of the best tools to help police solve and prevent crime.

Since installation of the Flock ALPR system in summer 2021, residents have reported it has proven highly effective in deterring crime within their community. The cameras have helped in several cases, including an incident of road rage that turned violent when a stranger pulled out a firearm, and property crime incidents.

As crime in Orlando continues to concern residents and Mayor Buddy Dyer does little to address the issue, could this become an option for more local neighborhoods?

Flock Safety is the first public safety operating system that powers 1,500 cities to capture objective evidence and deliver it directly into the hands that stop crime. The company works with the whole community – neighborhoods, businesses, law enforcement, and elected officials – to solve and reduce crime.

The company also emphasizes that Flock Safety cameras capture license plates and vehicles, not people or faces. The ALPR cameras and machine learning technology are engineered to capture vehicle characteristics, types, and license plates, which are then checked against state and federal records to ensure accuracy and minimize errors, according to the company.
