A Deltona teen was killed after being dragged by a pickup truck on Sunday, in what investigators believe was a drug deal gone wrong.

18-year-old Tristan De Joy was seen walking Sunday to the end of Sonnet Court, the street where he lives, investigators said.  A pickup truck was spotted driving to the end of the street where he was, when suddenly the vehicle took off speeding with him hanging on to its exterior.

De Joy eventually lost his grip and tumbled into the street, sustaining critical injuries in the fall.  He was airlifted to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach where he was pronounced dead just before 6:30 p.m.

Investigators learned that De Joy had been selling marijuana.  A small digital scale was found in the pocket of his pants, investigators said.

The driver and pickup truck have been located and interviews with witnesses are ongoing.

No charges have been filed up until Monday morning, but the incident remains under investigation, deputies also say.
