Mother, Son Killed in Two-Car Crash on County Road 13

Katherine Townsend, 36, the mother of 9-year-old John Townsend, who died earlier today, has also passed away, troopers said.

A 9-year-old Orlando boy died on Thursday afternoon and his mother is in critical condition, after their car was hit by a pick-up truck yesterday.

Troopers said, John Townsend, 9, was thrown from the 1998 Oldsmobile van Katherine Townsend, 36, was driving, after it was struck on County Road 13 and 5th Avenue.  John, who was transported to the Arnold Palmer Children’s Hospital died earlier this afternoon.

Thomas Lee II, 47, of Maitland, who struck the Townsend’s vehicle told troopers, he was heading northbound on County Road 13, and did not see the stop sign at the intersection at 5th Avenue.   Lee drove through the stop sign without stopping and struck the passenger side of the Oldsmobile van, which was traveling eastbound, troopers said.

Ema Townsend, 13, who was also traveling in the Oldsmobile, suffered minor injuries.

Troopers said, the crash remains under investigation and charges are pending.
