Local Post Offices May Close

The U.S. Postal Service could likely close 11 local postal offices in Central Florida.

The Agency, which faces a $7 billion loss this fiscal year, has taken a number of measures over the past few years, including hiking the price of stamps and staff reductions, to stem these losses.   The agency’s financial challenges are so severe that last week the Government Accountability Office placed the U.S. Postal Service on its list of troubled agencies.

Meanwhile, Acting Vice President, U.S. Postal Service, Jordan Small told a congressional sub-committee that managers will study some 3,200 stations nation-wide for possible closure.

“We anticipate that out of these 3,200 stations and branches, under 1,000 offices could be considered as viable candidates to study further” for closing, Small said.

Small also said that, no decisions will be made regarding which, if any, facilities will be consolidated until these reviews are finalized, and we have incorporated a community notification process into the review.

No changes are expected before September, 30, the end of the current fiscal year.
