Florida Department of Health (DOH) Interim Deputy Secretary of Health Dr. Dennis Cookro today announced Michael Mason as Director of Minority Health, effective immediately. As Director of the Office of Minority Health, Mr. Mason will provide oversight of programs and policies aimed at improving health for racial and ethnic minorities in Florida.
“Mr. Mason will be invaluable in this new role as he works to advance policies and programs to reduce health outcome disparities in minority populations,” said Dr. Cookro. “His leadership will improve the health of those we serve across the state.”
Since May 2012, Mason served as the Interim Chief of the Bureau of Chronic Disease Prevention. As the Interim Chief, Mr. Mason was responsible for managing staff operations, a budget of $12 million in chronic disease programs, and $50 million in biomedical research.
Mason has 13 years of experience with various duties including budget management, supervision of staff, contract development and management, and program and project management.
He earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University.
