New Yorkers are living longer than Americans across the rest of the country and Mayor Michael Bloomberg says that’s due to his administration’s health policies.
A New Yorker born in 2010 has a life expectancy of 80.9 years, 2.2 years longer than the national life expectancy of 78.7 years at the time, rawstory.com reports.
Bloomberg, in the midst of fierce criticism, adopted sweeping public health policies and in 2003 banned smoking in bars, restaurants and work places. And in September, New York City Board of Health approved the mayor’s ban on large sugar-sweetened drinks, which Bloomberg said is a huge blow against obesity in the city.
“Our willingness to invest in health care and bold interventions is paying off in improved health outcomes, decreased infant mortality and increased life expectancy,” said Bloomberg.
