State Nixes License Plate Privatization Plan

The Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles is backing away from a plan to farm out license plate distribution to private vendors. Objections to the plan had been raised by county tax collectors, who currently distribute license plates, and by a couple members of the Florida Cabinet.

“We listened to what everyone had to say, considered questions that vendors posed and received information from our tax collector partners,” HSMV Director Julie Jones told the Miami Herald. “Based on the input, we have decided to withdraw.”

Manufacturing company Avery Dennison and St. PRIDE, the nonprofit that uses prisoners to manufacture tags, had filed formal protests over the proposal. The agency is still planning to move forward with a plate redesign in an effort to make plates more readable by toll booth cameras.
