As the United States recognizes America Recycles Day Thursday, Nov. 15, 2012, one Orange County high school is upcycling. Timber Creek High School Service Learning Academy students are reusing trash to make ornaments, jewelry, and various holiday decorations.
In past years, they’ve made wreaths out of trash bags and ornaments from soda cans and water bottles as part of the school’s “Green Holiday” tradition. On Friday, Nov. 16, 2012 from 7:30 a.m. until 9 a.m. students in two class periods will make magazine bead bracelets, soda tab bracelets, and sew Capri Sun purses.
Timber Creek High School is a 2012 Florida Green School winner because of the work by students in the Service Learning Academy and the school’s Service Learning Coordinator and teacher Wendy Doromal. The Florida Green Schools award is presented by The Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s Office of Environmental Education in partnership with the Department of Education, Department of Health, Florida’s Foundation, and the Sustainable Florida Program. All year the students study environmental issues and then create service learning projects to apply their knowledge and promote environmental stewardship.
