Wildcats skin Bears 24-13, Continue path towards MEAC Title

The B-CU Choo-choo just seems to keep rolling along with Saturday’s 24-13 win over Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) foe Morgan State University in Baltimore Maryland.

Isidore Jackson trumped for 111 yards while two quarterbacks showed love for B-CU in a solid road showing. Quentin Williams passed for 70 yards and rushed for 64 with one touchdown while Broderick Waters had one interception, then made up for it with an 6-yard touchdown truck. You gotta love redemption…niiice. Waters finished the game 0 for 3 with that pick.

It wasn’t like the Bears just lay down. It was a battle. The MSU’s Travis Davidson’s 4-yard scoring run gave the Bears an early 7-0 lead. Sven Hurd’s field goal got Bethune-Cookman on the board. Later, Quentin Williams’ 5-yard touchdown pass to Eddie Poole put the Wildcats up 10-7.

Morgan’s Earvin Gonzalez was good for two field goals and tied it 10-all at halftime, but the TD I mentioned earlier materialized just in time. Brodrick Waters’ 6-yard touchdown run put Bethune-Cookman ahead, 17-10.

Another Gonzalez 38-yard field goal to open the fourth quarter tightened it, but Jackson scored with 1:40 left to seal the deal. Here I insert an original K.T. catch-phrase, in the words and tone of my former Company Commander in the Navy…Outstanding!

MSU is a tough team folks but they endured some misfortunes and B-CU delivered their fifth loss. To top it off it was Senior Day for the Bears in front of 2,187 in B-more. That being said, you know it was a howling atmosphere in the “Den”, that is Hughes Stadium. Oh yeh, shout out to my girl and Baltimore native, Calandra Bennent of CoBennet. Bless fully, B-More was largely spared from Superstorm Sandy (whew), the Wildcats came through unscathed and won their fifth consecutive game while staying perfect in MEAC play at 5-0, 7-2 overall.

Rush, rush, and more rush!

The rushing attack is on point folks. Four B-CU ball-carriers accounted for at least 50 yards. Collectively, they produced 259 yards while Morgan State (3-6, 2-4) was held to 76 yards on the ground. If you are worth your salt with regards to football knowledge, you know this sort of points to defense. Stay with me now.

The limiting of any given team to 76 grounds of ground offense is a decent feat. Dig these on the road defensive contributions.

Defense cooks in hostile environment

Dawud Lane was good for a 16-yard interception return and also led all B-CU defenders. Tyrone Bouie forced a fumble recovered by Rashad Payne, which set up a score for the Wildcats. Jarkevis Fields registered a tackle and a couple pass breakups. Man I’m telling you, the defense was solid in a hostile environment. I like that. While reading through the final defensive stats everything was equally balanced. I simply wasn’t able to give anyone any extra shine.

Next up: Savannah State Tigers…in Savannah!

Sorry folks, no band information for ya this week! I’m sure Morgan State’s Magnificent Marching Machine did the Maryland folks proud. Back to football, it is lonely at the top with a target on your back and everyone gunning for your hide. The Wildcats will journey next to Savannah, GA to enjoy some Georgia Peaches and battle with the SSU Tigers next week.

SSU is sporting a 1-8 record overall and are 0-6 in conference play. Laugh if you want to. Any team can win on a given afternoon. I am positive they would love to play spoiler to B-CU’s spotless conference record. Undoubtedly, Coach “J” knows this.

In addition, our neighbors to the immediate north will certainly have a huge dose of southern hostility err hospitality readily served up for B-CU next week. I am looking forward to being on the sidelines digging SSU’s Coastal Empire Sound Explosion, and of course the dancers’ maaaan! Look for your boy on the sidelines and holla at me if you see me.
