Scott Slammed for Refusal to Extend Early Voting Hours

Gov. Rick Scott

Record turn out at the polls and long lines at polling stations prompted the Florida Democratic Party and League of Women Voters of Florida, among others, to write to Gov. Rick Scott requesting that voting hours be extended statewide.

But on Thursday, Scott refused.

Reacting to Scott’s refusal to extend early voting hours, the FDP said the governor was breaking with history and pointed out that other Republican governors – Charlie Crist and Jeb Bush – had done so in the past.

“Once again, Rick Scott has sided against the people of Florida,” said Scott Arceneaux, Executive Director of the FDP. “In rejecting calls for an extension of early voting hours, Scott has failed in his constitutionally obligated duty, broken with the history of past Republican Governors and reminded Florida voters why they continue to hold a negative opinion of this Governor. The people of Florida will not forget his failure to stand up for their right to vote.”

Amidst much outcry, the Republican-dominated legislature, in its overhaul of Florida election laws, had cut early voting days from 14 to 8.
