Monday, July 20th 2009 marks an historic day, as 40 years ago, man took the first steps on the moon.
On July 20th 1969, Apollo 11 commander Neil Armstrong stepped out of the lunar module and took “one small step” in the Sea of Tranquility, calling it “a giant leap for mankind.” This was the culmination of eight years of hard work by thousands of Americans.
With numerous ceremonies around the U.S. commemorating the 40th anniversary, NASA is celebrating the 40th anniversary of man’s first steps on the lunar surface with a giant moon pie of marshmallows and chocolate.
NASA’s oversized treat will be available once sice at a time to visitors Monday to the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex in Cape Canaveral.
Armstrong, who remains unassuming to this day, will participate in limited ceremonies to mark the anniversary.
Forty years ago, he was accompanied by astronauts, Buzz Alrin and Michael Collins on this historic mission.
