Jenkins, Others Named to Red Tape Education Panel

Orange County Superintendent Dr. Barbara Jenkins

One day after telling reporters that he would ask public school superintendents to look into what kept teachers away from the classroom, Gov. Rick Scott on Wednesday tapped seven of them to come up with ways to reduce red tape.

Scott who just completed an education listening tour said that, a recurring theme from teachers was that they are involved in too much paperwork which take them out of the classroom.

Scott tapped Orange County Schools Superintendent Barbara Jenkins, along with William Husfelt, Bay County; Robert Runcie, Broward County; Douglas Whittaker, Charlotte County; Wallace Cox, Highlands County; Joseph Joyner, St. Johns County; and Margaret Smith, Volusia County, to serve on the 7-member panel.

The panel is tasked with coming up with a list of recommendations within 30 days on how to reduce red tape in the classroom and give teachers more time with their students.
