Thompson, Links to Fund 100 State IDs for First Time Voters

State Rep. Geraldine Thompson

The Orlando Chapter of the Links Inc. and Rep. Geraldine Thompson will co-host an event to drive voter registration in West Orlando. The Links, Inc. will purchase 100 state identification cards for first time voter registrants.

Thompson, a member of the Links, Inc., has scheduled The FLOW Mobile, a mobile unit that is operated by the Department of Motor Vehicles, to issue same day on-site state identification cards. The Division of Elections and the Links, Inc. members will also be on site for same day voter registration .The event is September 28th from 3p.m.-6p.m. at the Hal Marston Community Center located at 3933 W.D. Judge Drive  Orlando, FL 32808.

The Orlando Chapter of the Links, Inc. will encourage members of the community to vote early by mail and provide requests for absentee ballots to facilitate voting.

Oree Johnson, President of the Orlando Chapter of the Links said that her organization is especially concerned with the effect that the recent voter laws have had on the immigrant community as a whole and the Haitian community in particular. “There are members of the Haitian community who are eligible to vote but feel intimidated about the process because of the recent laws passed in the Florida legislature. We hope this voter registration drive will educate new voters about the process and help drive out higher participation in the immigrant community.”

“Difficult economic times have denied a lot of people their basic right to vote because they simply can’t afford the cost of identification. We wanted to make a difference,” said Thompson.

Go with the FLOW and VOTE!
