Man Charged with Attempted Murder of Orange County Deputy

The victim in this case is Orange County Deputy Sheriff Charlie Murphy, a six-year veteran of the Sheriff’s Office.

An Orange County deputy sheriff was shot in the back early this morning by a man known to him, Orlando police say.

29-year-old Eric Howell shot the unnamed deputy in the back following a dispute at a storage facility located at 5401 L.B. McCleod Road. The shooting happened Wednesday just before 7:00 a.m., police also say.

Howell is the father of a child by a woman known to both men. The nature of the dispute between the two men is unknown at this time. 

Police say, the deputy sheriff suffered non-life threatening injuries.

Howell has been charged with attempted murder with a firearm, aggravated battery with a firearm and battery.

Howell will be booked into the Orange County Jail later today.
