Another person has been arrested in an expanding absentee ballot fraud investigation in South Miami.
Sergio Robaina, 74, the uncle of Hialeah’s former mayor was arrested Friday, the Miami Herald reported. His nephew is former Hialeah Mayor Julio Robaina.
Robaina, who turned himself over to authorities, has been charged with two felony counts of voter fraud and two misdemeanor counts of violating a county ordinance by tampering with at least two absentee ballots.
Last week, Deisy Cabrera, 56, from Miami-Dade was arrested, accused of forging an elderly woman’s signature on an absentee ballot and for violating that county’s ordinance which bans the possession of more than two filled-out absentee ballots.
Over the years, absentee ballots have played a major role in Orlando’s mayoral and Orange County elections. For instance, earlier this year, absentee ballots represented about 40 percent of the overall votes cast in the last mayoral election – an unprecedented proportion in a historically low turnout election.
Sad!
