A Miami-Dade woman was arrested Thursday, accused of forging an elderly woman’s signature on an absentee ballot and for violating a Miami-Dade County ordinance banning the possession of more than two filled-out absentee ballots.
56-year-old Deisy Cabrera, also known as a boltero or “balloteer,” is part of a cottage industry in which paid small-time operatives find ways to collect absentee mail-in votes in Miami-Dade, the miamiherald.com reports.
While the exact number of bolteros is unknown in Miami-Dade, they can made up to $5,000 for a month’s work, working for several campaigns, the paper reports.
