Former Teacher Jailed for Sex with Underage Student

Dennis Turner – suspect

A Merritt Island man and former high school teacher was arrested Tuesday, accused of having a sexual relationship with a student.

Dennis Turner, 56, is believed to have had a three-year long relationship with a student while he was employed as a drama teacher at Edgewood Junior/Senior High School, Brevard County deputies said.

Authorities also say, the investigation was initiated late this past school year when Edgewood received information from concerned parents regarding what was deemd as inappropriate activity by turner.

A victim told investigators she engaged in a three- year sexual relationship with Turner beginning when she was 15 years old. She also said that, incidents occasionally occurred during school hours and on school property. Investigators believe the criminal conduct occurred until the victim graduated from the school.

Turner resigned his position at Edgewood prior to the end of the school year. He is charged with 126 counts of sexual battery of a person under 18 years while in custodial authority.

Turner is being held at the Brevard County Jail on a $4.4 million bond.

Investigators believe that there may be other children who could have been victimized by Turner and are requesting anyone with information about potential victims to contact the Special Victim’s Unit at 321-633-8419 or CRIMELINE at 1-800-423-TIPS (8477). All calls to CRIMELINE are confidential, and callers can remain anonymous and be eligible for a reward for information leading to an arrest.
