Freshman Campus Dean Thomas Tyler prepares the ground for new plants and mulch
One of the many missions of the faculty and staff of Evans High School is maintaining the physical integrity of the campuses on which they work. But, with limited staff and even more limited funding, oftentimes the staff must become creative in their efforts. Rolando Bailey, Assistant Principal at Evans High School, has enlisted the faculty, staff, students and the help of a local company to assist in the beautification of the Evans High School campus.
Hands on Orlando is a non-profit organization which identifies, plans, manages and leads high-quality projects that engage thousands of volunteers; individuals, families, groups and companies. With a lead from the Orange County Public Schools Grounds Department, Bailey, who has been an Assistant Principal for five years, enlisted Hands on Orlando to organize a beautification project on the Evans High School Main Campus on Saturday, August 9. Principal, David Christiansen, Mr. Bailey and Lynne Newsome, Social Studies Co-Chairperson, came up with the idea which includes the distribution of 75 yards of mulch, painting and the planting of more than 300 plants at various sites across campus.

Community partners, Davey Tree and Home Depot provided the mulch, Girard Nurseries provided the plants, and Universal Studios provided some of the volunteers who were present for the project. More than 300 volunteers were present to pitch in a hand.
The project, which lasted from 8:30 to 11:30, is part of an ongoing effort to improve the grounds for the students and the Evans High School 50th anniversary celebration which is scheduled for this year.
“There are no shortcuts to anyplace worth going, is a quote we believe in,” said Mr. Christiansen. “We want to make this campus A Place of High Achievement!”
