The parents of a Titusville toddler who accidentally shot herself last in the chest, were taken into custody in Orange County yesterday.
22-year-old Marie Buskey and 37-year-old Leshumbia Stokes were booked into the Orange County Jail on Wednesday afternoon.
Warrants were issued for the couple’s arrest after their 4-year-old toddler picked up a 9mm handgun left on a couch and accidentially shot herself in the chest.
Buskey was charged with child neglect with great bodily harm and culpable negligence. She is being held on a $75,000 bond.
Stokes, the father of the toddler was charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and tampering with evidence. His bond has been set at $150,000.
According to news reports, the toddler was rushed to Parrish Medical Center in Titusville following the accident on May 12. She was subsequently transferred to Arnold Palmer Children’s Hospital in Orange County. The parents were visiting the child on Wednesday when they were taken into custody.
Police said, Stokes, a convicted felon, tried to get rid of the handgun at the home before law enforcement arrived, floridatoday.com reported.
The toddler was brought out of a medically induced coma on Sunday, the paper also reported.
The couple will be extradicted back to Titusville.
