A man was killed early this morning on State Road 528, after the U-haul truck in which he was traveling struck a pick truck and slid down an embankment.
The crash occurred just before 4:30 a.m. Wednesday, about 0.3 miles East of State Road 520.
22-year-old Russell Lee Newby, of Defuniak Springs, Florida, the passenger in the U-haul truck, died from his injuries at the Orlando Regional Medical Center, troopers said.
Cornel Burnette, 58, the driver of the U-haul, hit the rear of a trailer on the back of a pick-up truck, also traveling east on State Road 528, Florida Highway Patrol said.
Burnette applied the brakes and steered the U-haul off to the shoulder. The vehicle traveled down an embankment and struck several trees, troopers said.
Burnette suffered serious injuries as a result of the crash.
Scott Witcoski, 51, of Panama City, the driver of the pick-up truck, was not hurt.
Troopers said the crash remains under investigation and charges are pending.
