In surprise presentations at their high schools on Monday, April 30, Edgewater High School student Davon Sherman, Evans High School student Joan Marcelin, Boone High School student Shaiquan Williams, Oviedo High School student Courtney Wright, Seminole High School student Jesimar Matos and Edgewater High School student David Mercedes were awarded the Valencia College (first three) and Seminole State Magic Scholarships (last three), respectively. Magic Community Ambassador Bo Outlaw, STUFF the Magic mascot, along with the Magic’s scholarship committee traveled to each winner’s high school surprising the students with large novelty checks and news of their scholarships. The presentations occurred on April 30 at each of the winner’s respective schools throughout the day. The scholarships are made possible through the Orlando Magic Youth Fund, a McCormick Foundation Fund (OMYF-MFF).
The Valencia Magic Scholarship and the Seminole Magic Scholarship awards three high school seniors, two-year scholarships, respectively, at $3,000 annually ($36,000 total). A total of six high school seniors were awarded the scholarships for the 2012-13 school years. The student must be a graduating senior from Orange, Seminole or Osceola counties and meet the academic and financial-need criteria. The academic requirements include a minimum 880 SAT score or a minimum 18 ACT score, a weighted cumulative G.P.A. of 2.5 or above on a 4.0 scale along with extracurricular activities/honors, two letters of recommendation and a 500 word essay on ‘what has been the most influential incident in your life to date and why?’. The student must be degree seeking and attend Valencia College or Seminole State College in the fall.
Edgewater H.S. student Davon Sherman will attend Valencia College and plans to study creative writing or journalism; Joan Marcelin (Evans H.S.) will attend Valencia College and plans to study business or hospitality; Boone H.S. student Shaiquan Williams will attend Valencia College to study computer science; Courtney Wright (Oviedo H.S.) will attend Seminole State College and study biology to become a surgeon; Seminole H.S. student Jesimar Matos will attend Seminole State College and would like to become a doctor; and David Mercedes (Edgewater H.S.) will attend Seminole State College to study finance and hopes to one day get his MBA.
