A man who shot his pregnant girlfriend as he drove away from the Daytona International Airport, then opened fire on police as they tried to initiate two traffic stops, is now recovering, along with his girlfriend.
22-year-old Marvin Jones opened fire on police after officers attempted to stop him near the Hampton Inn not far from Richard Petty Boulevard and ERAU Boulevard. Jones had just driven away from the Daytona International Airport after collecting his girlfriend on Saturday night, around 8:30 p.m. An unidentified caller told police a man, later identified as Jones had been sitting in the car waiving a gun at the airport.
As police tried to stop Jones, he exited the vehicle and fired several rounds from his handgun at officers.
A second traffic stop was initiated and according to police, Jones got out of the vehicle again and fired on officers for a second time.
Police returned fire striking Jones in the left hand, left forearm and right shoulder and back, according to his arrest affidavit.
Jones spontaneously said, “I shot my wife, my wife has been shot and I wish you guys would have just killed me.”
Police said, Jones’ girlfriend was found slumped over in the vehicle with at least one gunshot wound.
Jones and his girfriend were transported to the Halifax Hospital trauma center for treatment.
The unnamed woman told detectives that she met Jones five months ago, and that she is pregnant with his child.
Jones has been charged with attempted first degree murder.
Police said, Jones has a criminal history from the New England area and has a current warrant for robbery from New Hampshire.
Detectives are still working to identify any additional witnesses who observed the incident on Saturday night.
