Gov. Rick Scott said Monday, he believes that the “right thing” will happen in the Trayvon Martin killing and the scrapping of the Grand Jury meeting tomorrow to review the Martin case is a decision that the special prosecutor, Angela Corey, has made.
“I had an opportunity to appoint her (Angela Corey) two weeks ago,” Scott said. “She is going through and doing a thorough investigation and she will make a good decision.”
Scott, who toured the Evans High School on Silver Star Road earlier today and who took reporters’ questions said, he is “very comfortable” that Corey will do the right thing.
“I have known Angela for quite a while and she is a very qualified individual,” he said. “She will do a great job.”
Martin, an unarmed black teen, was shot and killed by George Zimmerman, a white Hispanic and self-appointed neighborhood watch captain, on February 26.
Although Zimmerman admitted that he fatally shot Martin, he said it was in self-defense.
The fatal shooting of Martin has sparked nationwide protests and marches and there have been calls for Zimmerman’s arrest. Sanford Police Department did not charge or arrest Zimmerman, but instead claimed there wasn’t probable cause to do so, referencing Florida’s Stand Your Ground law.
Scott noted that the fatal shooting of Martin is a tragedy and that his family must be kept in mind. After that, there must be justice for both Trayvon Martin’s family and for George Zimmerman, he said.
Scott also referenced the Task Force he announced nearly two weeks ago, which will review public safety in the state, including the Stand Your Ground law. The Task Force is expected to get going at the conclusion of the Martin investigation.
Asked whether he is concerned that tensions in Sanford are building and that things could get out of control, Scott expressed his confidence in Florida’s law enforcement agencies and the State Attorney.
“We have great law enforcement in Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE), we have a great State Attorney,” he said. “Everyone wants justice – justice for Trayvon Martin’s family, justice for George Zimmerman. I believe with FDLE, the U.S. Department of Justice and the State Attorney involved, the right thing will happen.”
