Water Polo sweeps University; Women’s Lacrosse sweeps Wekiva

Senior Rachel Dytrych and sophomore Allie Magrino scored five goals each, seven of their combined ten in the first quarter alone, to lead Women’s Water Polo to an 18-1 victory over University. DP (9-4) got on the board quickly when Magrino took a crossing pass from Dytrych and buried it in the right corner. Heather MacNeil followed up with a fast break goal into the top left corner and things went south quickly for the host Cougars. The Panthers jumped out to an 8-0 lead and capped the opening period with Dytrych’s one-timer off an assist from Meredith Canty. In the second, Shannon MacNeil opened the scoring with a power play goal to make it 9-0 and Dytrych netted two consecutive goals before Rikki Price drove coast-to-coast, fired a shot and smacked home the rebound off the crossbar for her first goal. Allie Magrino closed out the first half with goal right at the buzzer and DP took a 14-0 lead into the second half. In the third quarter, Maria Reyes scored the first of her two goals and Emily Kliewer punched home a rebound off a shot by Sunny Zhu for a 16-1lead heading into the fourth. Jillian Goulden skipped one into the back of the net and Reyes closed out the game with a goal off a pass from Zhu for the 18-1 final.Following the game, University, with one of the best traditions in the Metro Conference, honored goalkeeper Marissa Goodrum with their Sportsmanship Medal.

Men’s Water Polo surged to a 10-1halftime lead and called off the dogs in the second half in a 12-7 victory ove rhost University. Senior Jack Orchard scored five goals, including four straight, and Austin Sellers tallied three goals as the Panthers improved to 12-1 on the season. Ryan Staton sandwiched first quarter scores around a goal from Ian Perkins before Orchard went on a four-goal tear for a 7-0 lead. Bruno Ferreira punched in DP’s eighth goal and Austin Sellers capped the first quarter with his first score to make it 10-1 at the half. Two more goals by Sellers gave DP a 12-1 lead and room to get everyone playing time. University had some success in the latter stages ofthe game, scoring six unanswered goals, but it simply wasn’t enough as DP rolled to their eighth straight victory. After the game, University honored junior Ian Perkins with their Sportsmanship Medal. DP will travel to Edgewater tonight.

Up at Wekiva High School, Women’s Lacrosse cruised to their fourth consecutive victory in an 18-6 demolition of the host Mustangs. Senior midfielder Katherine Breese had a banner game with nine goals and two assists and junior attack Sarah Hamp picked up a trio of goals and assisted on two more. Cymber Larkin added two goals and an assist, ElizabethHales scored a goal and assisted on five more with Michaela Decker, Ravene Moore and Jessica Clark picking up goals. Mia Emmerson registered 14 saves in goal for the Panthers (7-2),who will head to University Wednesday.

Women’s JV Lacrosse profited from three goals by Jimena Davila and five other scorers in an 8-3 victory over Wekiva. DP(6-2) also saw goals from Tonie Stephen, Michelle Schneiter, AlenaPoulin, Devan Kocarek and Daniela Davila.

Yasin Chentouf went 4-5 at the plate with three stolen bases and two runs scored as JV Baseball rolled to a 10-0 victory over host Edgewater. Josh Jimenez got the call on the hill and went five innings, allowing just two hits. Matt Sullivan was 2-3 with a double scored twice, Brendan Maher finished 2-3 with an RBIand a run scored and Nakea Gibson went 2-3 and stole two bases. DP (8-4)has won four straight.

Men’s Lacrosse (7-2) went into the halftime break tied 3-3 with visiting West Orange but couldn’t keep up the pace in the second half in a 12-6 loss to the Warriors. Goalkeeper Craig Jackson finished with 25 saves while Doug Essig (two goals, assist)and Ian Decker (two goals, three assists) sparked the offense. JV Lacrosse (4-2) saw goals by Steven Weatherford, Mac Baxte rand Connor Jackson but came up short vs. West Orange, 12-3. Both teams will look to get back on track tonight at Apopka.

Dr. Phillips’ Women’s Basketball team, currently ranked #21 in the nation by USA Today, will head back up to Bethesda, Maryland to defend their title at the 2012 ESPNHS National Tournament March 30th and 31st. DP (29-3) will take on DC powerhouse and three-time defending city champion HD Woodson (25-5) in the 5:30 PM semifina lMarch 30th on ESPNU. Woodson plays Good Counsel, who beat DP in Phoenix, tonight in search of their fourth straight city title. A victory by Dr. Phillips in Maryland would put them in the championship game March 31stat noon on ESPN2 against the winner of #4 Riverdale Baptist (MD) and Orlando Edgewater. That’s not the only event the team is preparing for, however. Highschool sports website MaxPreps and the U.S. Army National Guard will be honoring the Panthers in their Tour of Champions, Wednesday, April 4that 10:45 AM in front of the Media Center. DP is one of only ten high schools selected out of over 20,000 nationwide for the honor!
