DP Women’s Lacrosse overcame a five-goal deficit and defeated host Olympia in overtime, 14-13. Down 10-5, DP(6-2) roared back to knot things up behind freshman Cymber Larkin’s four goals and three goals each by senior Katherine Breese and junior Elizabeth Hales, who also added four assists. Juniors Sarah Hamp and Michaela Decker picked up two goals each and senior goaltender Mia Emmerso nregistered 17 saves. DP, which has already locked up the top seed for the upcoming District Tournament April 18th, will travel to Wekiva Monday. Victories over Wekiva and Edgewater (April 13th) would clinch the Panthers’ first-ever Metro West Conference Championship. JV Lacrosse saw Jimena Davila and Daniela Davila score fourgoals apiece as the Panthers doubled up host Olympia, 8-4, to improve to 5-2.
Ryan Staton scored four consecutive goals in the middle of a 6-0 run and Collin Brandt picked upseven saves in the cage as Men’s Water Polo held off host LakeNona for an 11-8 victory. Senior Reed Davis scored the opening andclosing goals for the Panthers (11-1), who jumped out to a 2-0 first quarterlead. Davis got the Panthers on the board at the 5:03 mark with a one-timer off a perfect pass from Evan Staton and less than a minute later, David James fed Bruno Ferreira down the middle and Ferreira planted it in the back right corner. Lake Nona came right back to tie the game up at 2-2 asthe quarter came to a close. Jack Orchard scored the first of his two goals with a rocket from the point for a 3-2 lead but Lake Nona scored twice totake a 4-3 lead midway through the period. Sophomore Ian Supra slammedhome the tying goal with 1:12 to go in the half off another stellar pass from DavidJames and DP went on to score five more in a row to pull away for good. RyanStaton closed out the first half with a skip shot into the right corner ona five meter penalty shot with 24 seconds to go . Up 5-4 in the third quarter,Staton struck again off a pass from Bruno Ferreira right down the middle of the pool and finished off the third quarter with a blast into the rightcorner from the point for a 7-4 lead. With 6:54 left in the fourth quarter,Staton tallied his fourth goal off a spectacular crossing pass from Evan Staton and deposited it into the right corner to double up the Lions, 8-4. JackOrchard got back into the mix just over a minute later. With two defenders smothering him, Orchard slipped free, spun to his right and sent a laser into the upper right corner for a 9-4 lead. Lake Nona showed why they’re a team to be reckoned with as they bounced back to score two goals to shave the deficit to 9-6, but Ryan Staton teamed up with Reed Davis for Staton’sfifth goal at 2:14. Lake Nona responded with another goal but Staton returned the favor to Reed Davis and the senior popped his second goal into theright corner for an 11-7 lead and the eventual victory. .
Women’s Water Polo staked host Lake Nona to a 4-0 first quarter lead and couldn’t recover ina 10-2 loss to drop their record to 8-4 on the season. The Panthers scored twice in the second quarter on goals by Heather MacNeil and Allie Magrino to cut the deficit to 5-2 but were held scoreless in the second half.
JV Baseball moved thei rrecord to 7-4 with their third consecutive win, a 14-4 victory over visitingFreedom. Brendan Maher went 2-3 and Nick Requa threw twoscoreless innings for the Panthers, who drew ten walks on the afternoon. They’ll head to Edgewater Monday.
Varsity Baseball continues to get great pitching but the bats just aren’t complementing as they fell to host Freedom, 1-0. Jakob Probst allowed just one run on four hits over six innings. Jalen Phillips(double), Jack Flaherty (single, two walks, stolen base) and Billy Underwood (single) were DP’s offensive standouts.
Softball suffered their second loss to Cypress Creek this season, 8-3, to fall to 10-6 on theseason. Caitlyn Jones went 2-4 with a double and a run scored and Sarah Kollas finished 2-4 and scored twice. Jones struck out five over six innings.
Three players from Women’s Basketball made the Orlando Sentinel’s All-Central Florida first team. Sophomore Taryn Griffey and juniors Hannah Schaible and Sydnei McCaskill were all named to the first team after leading the program to its second consecutive State Championship. Sophomore Jade Cheek was named to the All-OrangeCounty team. Griffey, who earned the Class 8A Player of the Year, finished fourth in the voting for Miss Basketball, the top individual honor among al lclassifications, but she will return as the top returning vote-getter in the state next year. The team will head up to Maryland over spring break to compete in the ESPN HS National Tournament.
The Academic Team Championship standings have been released by the FHSAA and Dr. Phillips had another strong showing. With four sports qualifying for the competition, DP was led by CompetitiveCheerleading which earned 4th place statewide with a team GPA of 3.363. Women’s Soccer earned 6th place in their sport withan unweighted team GPA of 3.507. Men’s Soccer also placed 6th in Class 5A with a 3.105 GPA and Women’s Weightlifting earned 24th place with a team GPA of 3.029. Overall, DP stands in 6th place statewide in Class 8A with 38 points.
