Central Fl YMCA & SOUTHWEST JAYCEES TO HOST MLK BREAFAST

 

WHAT: 17th annual Arthur “Pappy” Kennedy Prayer Breakfast celebrating the life and accomplishments of Orlando’s first African-American elected official, Pappy Kennedy, as well as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on Monday January 21, 2008

At the prayer breakfast, the 2008 Arthur “Pappy” Kennedy Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented along with the Arthur “Pappy” Kennedy Scholarship.  The $1,200 scholarship is presented to an African-American high school senior who has exemplified dedication to their community and education.

WHEN:    Monday, January 21, 2008 7:45 a.m.

 

The breakfast will include a speaking presentation by Ernest Green, a member of the “Little Rock Nine.” He and eight other black students were the first to integrate Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas following the 1954 US Supreme Court decision in Brown v. Board of Education that declared segregation illegal. Green is presently the Managing Director of Public Finance for Lehman Brothers’ Washington, DC office and was appointed as chairman of the African Development Foundation by President Clinton.

 

More than 700 community and business leaders attended last year.

INFO:       A majority of the proceeds from the event will be used to support the Arthur “Pappy” Kennedy Memorial Scholarship Fund
