The pressure is mounting on Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer to sign off on a pledge indicating that if elected on April 3, he would serve a full term as mayor.
Last night, Orlando Commissioner Phil Diamond (District 1), running to unseat Dyer signed off on the pledge. Ken Mulvaney, another candidate in the Orlando mayoral race, also signed the pledge on February 23, 2012.
Mike Cantone, who came up with the idea of the pledge and is a candidate himself in the race said, he is “astonished” that Mayor Dyer continues “to put his own ego and ambition ahead of the people of Orlando.”
Over the past several weeks, Cantone has pressed Dyer to sign the pledge committing to serve a full term if relected mayor, given the speculation that he intends to seek the office of governor in 2014.
Cantone has long expressed concern that if Dyer were to be re-elected then leave to run against on Rick Scott in 2014, this could create an unstable situation for Orlando and its residents.
“I’m astonished that Mayor Dyer continues to put his own ego and ambition ahead of the people of Orlando,” he said. “His arrogant behavior and constant refusal to be honest about his future political ambition exposes Dyer’s true intentions and hurts the people of Orlando. It’s time to sign the pledge, Mr. Mayor.”
