Man Killed in Crash while Driving Wrong Way on Powers Drive

Troopers with Florida Highway Patrol say a man driving the wrong way on Powers Drive in Orlando was killed early on Sunday morning, after his car collided with a second vehicle.

27-year-old Roland C. Williams of Orlando was heading south in a 2000 Chrysler in the northbound lanes on Powers Drive when he collided with an oncoming Ford van going northbound.

68-year-old Ledor J. Legene, the driver of the 2001 Ford van traveled onto the east shoulder of Powers Drive in an attempt to avoid the Chrysler which struck the front, left of the van.

Troopers said, upon impact, Williams traveled to the west side of Powers Drive, struck the curb and a power pole which crashed onto the roof of the car, which eventually overturned facing west in the middle of Powers Drive.

Williams was pronounced dead on the spot.

The crash occurred just before 3:00 a.m., near Bolling Drive.

It was not immediately known why Williams was driving in the wrong direction at the time of the crash, although there is speculation that alcohol might have played a role.

Legene suffered no injuries as a result of the crash.

Troopers said that toxicology results are being awaited to determine whether or not alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash. Willimas was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident.

The crash remains under investigation.
