Brain Drain? Younger People Leaving South Florida

Young people are leaving South Florida in droves owing to the lack of opportunities.

A recent study by the Brookings Institute ranks South Florida fifth among the top 5 metro areas losing residents in the 25-34-year-old demograpic, along side New York, Los Angeles and Chicago, the Miami Herald reports.

With a 10 percent unemployment rate in South Florida, well above the national jobless rate of 8.6 percent, it’s not difficult to see why young people are fleeing the area.

  1. South Florida sucks! Outside of the beaches and nice weather, this place is a DUMP!!!! Half of the people are Homeless, no jobs,

  2. Its low cost of living for a reason, lack of consumer demand adversely influences economic opportunity. New York is too pricey, Chicago is too violent, Florida is too cheap. But nonetheless, its why people refrain from deviating from inner cities – given the concentration of consumer demand and thus job opportunities. People retire in Florida because they usually have a consistent income stream and consider the low cost of living as a deal given their need for more income is less of a concern.

    But they get you on UNAFFORDABLE house costs (in good neighborhoods, not luxury) and sky high prop taxes.

    Gas too.
