Florida GOP Voters Warn, Don’t Touch Medicare, Social Security

Republican candidates should take note. Florida GOP voters don’t want you messing with either Medicare or Social Security benefits, according to a poll released Thursday by AARP.

“The message these voters are sending is clear: Do not cut the Social Security and Medicare benefits they’ve earned,” said Nancy LeaMond, AARP executive vice president, in a statement. “These findings demonstrate that strong majorities of supporters for every Republican presidential candidate oppose cuts to Social Security and Medicare benefits.”

Responants opposed Social Security cuts by a 66-28 percent margin. Support of Medicare was even more pronounced, with voters opposing cuts to the federal health by a 70-22 percent margin.

The popularity of both federal programs extends to party members who said they agreed with the Tea Party, and had attended Tea Party events. They opposed cuts to future benefits as deficit-reduction measures by large margins: 56 to 38 percent on Social Security and 62 to 32 percent on Medicare.

The poll’s margin of error was 4.3 percent.
