Florida Department of Health Decimated

A state minority health official has been fired and four other Department of Health administrators have been forced to resign as state Surgeon General Frank Farmer seeks to reorganize the agency.

Dr. Monica Hayes, assistant director of the Office of Minority Health, was dismissed Oct. 24, the agency said Tuesday.

Dr. Lisa Conti, a longtime environmental health official; Dr. Jean Kline, who was in charge of emergency medical operations; Julie Meadows-Keefe, who was chief legal counsel; and Dr. Phylis Sloyer, who was director of Childrens Medical Services, all resigned either late last month or early this month, according to the department.

“For those dismissed, this transition in personnel is a reflection of the efforts to align with the surgeon general’s goals set for the agency,” agency spokeswoman Jessica Hammonds said in an email.

The agency is in the midst of a large reorganization that would transfer various programs and is aimed at saving more than $200 million.
