Ocoee Elementary School media specialist Isabel Chipungu submitted the award-winning entry worth $35,000. The award was announced at a ceremony in late October at the 2011 American Association of School Libraries Conference in Minneapolis, MN. The school gets $35,000 worth of products and services from Follett Corporation for the media center.
For her winning entry detailing an example lesson learned in the Ocoee Elementary media center, Chipungu wrote about a first-grade play based on the works of author Eric Carle. First-grade teachers provided a list of 23 scientific vocabulary words that all students needed to know. A pre-test was administered to all students using an interactive whiteboard and voting devices. The students took the test using technology and results were available instantly. The object was to integrate art, music, physical education, and media literacy into the first-grade science curriculum. Students received daily instruction in one of the above disciplines to learn the words and their meanings. After nine weeks, the results were astounding. A post-test was taken and all students made learning gains. Many classes showed a growth of 60 percent in the understanding of vocabulary words. All 140 students, including those with learning disabilities, made learning gains. They produced a live musical performance to an audience of their kindergarten peers celebrating what they learned.
The Follett Challenge was designed to reward school media centers for applying technology, content and creativity in ways that engage students, foster literacy, and promote critical thinking.
Isabel Chipungu said, “This achievement was the result of the whole school practicing our motto – “Focused on Learning and Achieving Success…Everybody Everyday.”
