One day ahead of a vote on President Barack Obama’s American Jobs Act, 25 Florida mayors wrote to Congressional leaders and the Florida Delegation, urging Congress to pass the legislation.
“With Florida’s unemployment at 10.7%, we see firsthand the foreclosed homes, the shuttered businesses, and the crumbling infrastructure in our communities,” the Florida mayors wrote in a letter dated, October 10, 2011. “…We cannot wait any longer. It is time for Congress to act now by passing the jobs plan.”
The majors, including Buddy Dyer of the City of Orlando; John R. Marks III, of Tallahassee; Bruce Mount, of Eatonville; Bob Buckhorn, of Tampa; and Dr. Philip Stoddard, Mayor of the City of South Miami, pointed out that passage of the bill will help create jobs for construction workers, teachers, first responders, veterans and the long-term unemployed.
“This should not be a partisan issue,” the mayors declared. “…The proposals in the jobs plan have been supported by both Democrats and Republicans. The targeted investments in transportation, job training, public schools, and public safety will foster a robust, long-term financial recovery for our cities and the nation as a whole.”
The Senate is set to vote on the $447 billion American Jobs Act later on Tuesday.
Even if it passes the Senate and this is not assured, the bill will likely be killed in the Republican-controlled House.
