Police Urge Pedestrians to Use Crosswalks

Sanford police warned today that pedestrians are not using crosswalks and taking too many chances.

Police report that in the last three weeks, there have been three pedestrians struck by vehicles. Of the three crashes, two were seriously injured and one person was killed.

These crashes could have been avoided if pedestrians used the crosswalks.

The fatal crash, which involved a female pedestrian occurred 100 feet from a crosswalk, police said. It would have added about five minutes to her walk.

In 2010 there were 42 vehicle vs. pedestrian crashes in Seminole. Of the 42 there were 27 injuries and 6 fatalities. So far to date this year there have been 34 pedestrian crashes, 23 injuries, and 6 fatalities.

There have been as many deaths this year, as there were last year, to date.

Police are asking pedestrians to be aware of the chances they are taking by not using crosswalks.
