A proposal to build a new stadium near the Orange County Convention Center for a New York Yankees baseball team, will not be moving forward.
On Wednesday, Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs said, after careful study of the proposed $47 million dollar project, it didn’t meet the requirements of the county.
According to Jacobs, providing county land to developers over the long term would give an unfair advantage over other businesses on I-Drive.
The proposed baseball project, which entailed relocation of the Tampa Yankees to Orlando, included the construction of a 5,000-seat stadium, a baseball museum and commercial space on 12-15 acres of land between Sea World and the Orange County Convention Center.
Armando Gutierrez Jr., one of the principals behind the stadium project, reacting to the news said, he regretted Mayor Jacobs’ decision, as the project was expected to create over 400 new jobs and generate millions of dollars in economic impact in the community.
