11-year old Florida boy to complete 1,235 mile Journey

Zach Bonner will set out on May 11 from Atlanta to Washington DC, 665 miles in his bid to complete the 1,235 mile journey from Tampa.   Zach, who is walking because he believes that it is the best way to draw attention to the over 1.3 million homeless kids in the U.S., began his journey called “My House to the White House”  in 2007.

As he notes on his website, www.LittleRedwagonFoundation.com, 13 kids on average die everyday for no reason than the effects of being homeless and I walk for them.   I walk to help give a voice to the kids that do not have one.

Zach says, I walk because it is something I can do and because it works.

Along the way from Atlanta to Washington DC, Zach will be collecting letters and deliverying them to the White House at the end of his walk.   He is encouraging everyone to speak up and let President Obama know that Youth Homelessness is an important issue and that his support of Youth Volunteerism is equally important.

According to Zach, “Education and awareness is the key to solving Youth Homeless and that is my goal.”

Zach’s charity work started a few years ago during Hurricane Charlie.  At that time, when he was only 6 years of age, he took a little red wagon door to door and after several months had collected 27 truck loads of supplies.

Zach’s Mom said, he liked it so much that when Katrina and Rita struck, a foundation which they called “Little Red Wagon Foundation” had to be set up on account of the monetary donations that were pouring in.

In 2006 Zach’s charity work came to President George Bush’s attention, who on a visit to Tampa gave him a Presidental Call to Service Award.   President Bush told him how very proud he was of his work.

Zach expects to walk about 11 miles a day on this last leg of his journey. His progrress will be charted on the website: http://zachtracker.com.

Says Zach, who will commence his final leg next Monday, “I’m excited.  A little nervous, but pretty much excited.”
