Engelwood Elementary collects “Pennies for Peace”

After all the students at Engelwood read the book “Listen to the Wind” by Greg Mortenson, they responded to the story by collecting pennies to build and outfit schools in Pakistan. Mortenson’s book portrays life for students in Pakistan where the threat of enemy bombs or extreme forms of government can prevent a child from going to school in a moment’s notice.

Engelwood students were inspired to create a museum with the help of their teachers to explain what students in Pakistan face every day. Now they are ready to show what they have learned. In addition to the museum, they are collecting every penny they can to send to Pakistan to build schools and purchase supplies.

The CFE Federal Credit Union will join the students on Friday, May 8, 2009 to donate $300 to help their cause. The credit union will also allow students to use their professional coin counters to tally their collections at the end of the month.
