A 13-year-old girl could end up losing her hand, thanks to a tissue and bone-eating bacteria.
Five years ago, Hannele Cox from San Bernandino County, California, sustained a cut on her hand while pulling it out of a fish-tank. She got a tiny scratch. But, a pathway was created for a microscopic bacteria called, Mycobacterium marinum, that sometimes cause a chronic skin infection called, fish-tank granuloma, also known as “swimming pool granuloma” or “aquarium granuloma”.
Hannele’s hand started oozing and she was put on antibiotics, but nothing stopped the bacteria, which eats tissue and bones.
