Two Orlando motorcyclists are dead following a crash with a tractor trailer on Sand Lake Road near Kingspointe Parkway on Thursday night.
Florida Highway Patrol said, 66-year-old Roger D. Wirick of Wewahitchka, Florida, was heading eastbound on Sand Lake Road attempting to make a left turn onto northbound Kingspointe Parkway, when the motorcyclists crashed into the rear of the trailer.
29-year-old Carl Simmons of Orlando, driving a 2004 Yamaha Mitsubithi and traveling westbound on Sand Lake Road in the left through lane, collided with the right rear of the semi. Troopers said, part of Simmons’ motorcycle collided with a traffic signal pole and ended up underneath the rear axle of the trailer.
Simmons, who was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, was taken to the Orlando Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
Another motorcycle, a 2005 Honda Mitsubitchi, driven by a 22-year-old man, was also heading westbound on Sand Lake Road and collided with the right rear of the tractor trailer. The unnamed Orlando man, who was wearing a helmet, was taken to the ORMC where he too, was pronounced dead.
Wirick suffered no injuries as a result of the crash.
Toxicology results are being awaited to determine if alcohol played a role in the crash.
Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) said that the crash remains under investigation and charges are pending.
