The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) said on Thursday it will provide details tomorrow on legal action related to a new elections law signed by Gov. Rick Scott, that disenfranchises the state’s most vulnerable voters.
The ACLU opposed the measure (HB 1355), which was billed as an anti-fraud effort, making it harder for people to vote illegally.
Opponents of the new measure have said it would negatively impact a wide range of voters, including African Americans, Latinos, students, members of the military and less affluent voters.
Signed into law by Scott in mid-May, the new elections measure denies existing voters who have moved or changed their name, the ability to cast a regular ballot; reduces the time for early voting from 15 days to 7 days; and makes it particularly burdensome for third-party voter groups to assist voters in registering to vote.
The ACLU plans to provide details of the legal action to be undertaken, Friday.
