A Merritt Island man was killed early on Tuesday after he was ejected from his vehicle while exiting I-95 on to State Road 520 in Brevard County.
Troopers said, 30-year-old Jason Hecklinger was heading north on I-95 and abruptly turned to enter the exit ramp to State Road 520, when he traveled through the safety zone and onto the east shoulder. Hecklinger’s 1995 Honda Civic struck a steel pole and continued in an easterly direction before overturning.
Hecklinger was ejected from the vehicle and died on the spot. He was not wearing a seat-belt, troopers said.
32-year-old Summer Jo Bertagna, of Cocoa, who was wearing a seat-belt, was able to get out of the vehicle and flag down help. Bertagna, who suffered minor injuries as a result of the crash, was taken to Wuesthoff Rockledge Hospital.
Troopers are awaiting toxicology results to determine whether alcohol played a role in the crash.
