Troopers: Rare Coins Spill onto I-95 as SUV Overturns

A Ford SUV overturned on I-95 in Volusia County on Thursday, spilling rare coins and currency onto the interstate.

Troopers said, 47-year-old Demetrio Cirillo, of Boca Raton, was heading north on I-95 around 4:00 pm, when a rear tire separated causing him to lose control of the SUV.

The Ford SUV overturned in the center grass median.

Cirillo told troopers the vehicle contained approximately $1 million worth of rare coins and currency, some of which spilled when the SUV over-turned. Cirillo told troopers he contacted several friends to retrieve the coins from the Woodline on I-95.

Demetrio was transported to the Halifax Medical Center with minor injuries.

46-year-old Dawn Cirillo, who was a passenger in the vehicle, also sustained minor injuries.

Troopers have warned that it is illegal for any person to stop on the interstate unless it is an emergency.

FHP said that anyone caught at the crash site parked on the side of the roadway or as a pedestrian will be ticketed.
