He came armed with several eye-catching pie charts and graphs, but not even these could save Rep. Daniel Webster (R-Florida) from the angry onslaught of the 300 persons or so, who attended a town hall meeting in Orlando today.
Webster, like so many of his Republican colleagues back in their home districts, was peppered with questions relating to his support for Rep. Paul Ryan’s (R-WI) budget plan, which entails ending Medicare, additional tax breaks for the wealthy and gutting of the Medicaid program.
One irate attendee at one point shouted, “I am tired. I can’t take it no more.”
Although Webster made little attempt to answer questions posed by the audience, he did state that, “Not a senior citizen is harmed by this budget (Paul Ryan),” to which the crowd erupted with shouts of “You are a liar.”
Another audience member shouted, “Why do the wealthy and rich continue to pay no taxes? Why to you continue to let this happen?”
At one point, a law enforcement officer intervened to quiet a man in the audience who was visibly angry.
Webster, who was unable to control the more than hour-long meeting, is the latest congressman to face an angry backlash from his constituents.
Recent polls show that about 70 percent of Americans are opposed to ending Medicare and Medicaid, and extending tax breaks for the wealthy.
