Deputy Shoots, Kills Man in Gunfire Exchange Outside Orange East Side Bar

An Orange County Sheriff’s deputy shot and killed a suspect during an exchange of gunfire outside an east side bar in Orange County early on Friday morning.

Investigators said, deputies responded to the Laughing Horse Tavern at 907 North Goldenrod Road just before 3:00 am, where they located an injured man who had been in a fight with another man.

While treating the injured man, deputies were confronted by a suspect armed with a gun and there was an exchange of gunfire.

Deputy Sheriff Daniel Shapiro, 27, was hit in the exchange of gunfire and received non-life threatening injuries. He was taken to the Orlando Regional Medical Center, treated and discharged.  DS Shapiro was wearing a bullet proof vest at the time of the incident.

Investigators said, the suspect was shot and killed during the exchange of gunfire. The name of the suspect has not been released.

The injured man whom deputies were treating was transported to the Orlando Regional Medical Center and is in stable condition.

Deputy Sheriff Hector Lopez, 42, who also drew his gun and fired on the suspect, was not hurt during the gunfire exchange.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting.
