Health Department Fighting Obesity, Washington Shores 5K Walk, Health Fair

During the past several decades, obesity rates for all groups in society regardless of age, sex, race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, education level, or geographic region have increased markedly. Being overweight or obese increases the risk of many diseases and health conditions, including hypertension (high blood pressure), Type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, stroke, sleep apnea, respiratory problems and some cancers.

The 5th Annual Washington Shores 5K Walk and Health Fair will take place on March 19th, at Hankins Park, 1340 Lake Park Court, beginning at 9:00 a.m.  This year’s 3.1 mile walk will take place during the Washington Shores 5k Walk and Health Fair and will be led by Mark McEwen, former CBS Morning Show Weatherman and local news anchor.

Mark was at the top of his game and enjoying life.  He was healthy, or so he thought, when he suffered a stroke. “I want stroke survivors to know that they’re not alone. There is indeed life after stroke, and physical activity is a key ingredient to good health which can prevent a stroke. You’ll get physical activity, healthy eating tips, education and much more at the Washington Shores 5K Walk.  I’ll be there, you should be there too” said Mark McEwen.

This is a great opportunity to join Mark for the walk and make the decision to stay active for better health.  Walking is an excellent way to start your journey into physical activity.

Throughout the nation and in Florida many people suffer diseases such as Diabetes, heart disease and stroke.  Lifestyle changes are an essential role in preventing these diseases. Fitting regular exercise into your daily schedule or making healthier choices while eating at restaurants or at home may seem difficult at first, but it is definitely worth starting to make those changes.

Adults and children with healthy lifestyles are less likely to develop heart disease, cancer, stroke, diabetes, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).  Together, these conditions accounted for over half the deaths in 2009, according to Florida statistics. In order to help control the risk factors for stroke and other chronic diseases, it is important to live a healthy lifestyle which includes: not smoking, eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly, reducing stress, and visiting a doctor to monitor your health.

In addition to walking, during the event attendees of all ages can enjoy free fun activities. There will be  interactive games and prizes for children by the Radio Disney Road Crew, zumba, yoga, rock climbing, a hula hoop contest, healthy cooking demonstrations and samplings, health information and screenings, and massages. Also an all senior women’s football team called the Orlando Starz will showcase their skills.

A “challenge” is being issued to all churches, schools, civic organizations, and businesses to participate in this heart healthy event. Trophies and prizes will be given to the organization that has the most participants. Pre-register for the free 5K Walk online by visiting the events section of www.orchd.com or you may register at the event.
